Wilma Joyce Austin McDowell

Wilma Joyce Austin McDowell, 93, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, formerly of Cave-In-Rock, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2022 at Countryside Manor in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

Joyce was born on June 27, 1929 in Shawneetown, Illinois to Verdna Millikan Hufsey Lane.

Joyce grew up in Hardin County, graduated from Cave-In-Rock High School, and married Gordon McDowell on November 29, 1947. They lived in Cave-In-Rock where they raised their four children. Joyce worked at the Hardin County State Bank for many years.

She is survived by her children; Phyllis (Max) Frailey of San Antonio Texas, Cindy (Kerry) Maxam of Marion, Illinois, Mike (Ronda) McDowell of Peoria, Arizona and Mitch (Shelley) McDowell of Mount Vernon, Illinois; eight grandchildren; Stephanie (Josh) Williams of San Antonio, Texas, Alex Maxam of Marion, Illinois, Andrew Maxam of Seattle, Washington, Hannah (Britt) Fullerton, Elisha (Mike) Smith, and Grace (Troy) Payne of Mount Vernon, Illinois and Emily (Todd) Marek and Brandon McDowell of Phoenix Arizona; seven great-grandchildren; Max and Elizabeth Williams of San Antonio, Texas, Hadassah and Evelyn Fullerton and Scarlet Payne of Mount Vernon, Illinois and Ellie and Gage Marek of Phoenix, Arizona.

Joyce was a member of the Central Christian Church of Mount Vernon, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Gordon Ray McDowell; mother, Verdna Lane and her brother, Weldon Hufsey.

Services are scheduled for 1:00 pm Thursday, November 10, 2022 at Hardin County Funeral Service with burial at Cave Hill Cemetery following the service. The family will receive visitors from 12:00 PM until service time at the funeral home.
