Rebecca Ann Elliott Long, 71, was born June 10, 1946 at Rosiclare, IL. She went home to be with her Lord on July 8, 2017. Becky was the daughter of Ray and Marie Sheldon Elliot. Her only brother, Clyde Wesley Elliott, preceded her in death in 2008. Her father worked in the mining industry and aside from a few years when the family relocated to Colorado for his work, she lived through her early school years in Rosiclare.
Becky’s dad died unexpectedly when she was about 8 years old. To support the family her mother attended beauty school and became a licensed beautician. In the fall of 1961 Becky and her mom moved to Cave In Rock where they lived in a small apartment that adjoined her mother’s beauty shop. She completed high school at Cave In Rock High graduating in June of 1964.
On October 16, 1964, Becky was united in marriage to Alfred “Abby” Long. The following year, on September 20, 1965 they were blessed with the birth of the only child, a daughter, Leigh Ann. Early in their marriage they purchased a home on what is now known as Ford’s Ferry Road where she and Abby resided at the time of her death.
Becky and Abby were saved during a revival at Levee Pond Church and were both baptized in the Ohio River at Elizabethtown on July 8, 1968. In recent times, they began attending the First Baptist Church in Cave In Rock where they became a part of a loving church family. Her final days on earth were spent longing to go home to Heaven and admonishing those around her to be ready to meet her there.
Becky was preceded in death by her parents and brother, and a grandson, Justin Merritt. She is survived by her husband of almost 53 years, Abby Long, her daughter Leigh Merritt, son-in-law Byron Merritt, 3 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
