Margaret "Maurine" (Hayes) Hughes, 96, of Marion, Kentucky died February 4, 2009 at St Mary's Hospital in Evansville, IN. Maurine was born in Sullivan County, Missouri. She was the daughter of William Oscar Hayes and Dora Belle (Mairs) Hayes. Maurine graduated from Green City High School in Green City, Missouri in 1932. She then began teaching in a one room school. She taught school during the winter and went to college during the spring and summer terms at Northeast Missouri State College (now Truman University) in Kirksville, Missouri. In 1946 she married Eugene Hughes and moved to his hometown, Marion, Kentucky. She taught school full-time in the Marion school system for one year. Later, Maurine did a considerable amount of substitute teaching in the Marion and the Crittenden County schools. She was a substitute teacher for over 25 years and enjoyed it very much. She also enjoyed reading, listening to the radio and visiting with family and friends.
Maurine was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved each member of her family, extended family of nieces and nephews and all of her friends. Maurine was a charter member of Central Baptist Church. She loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her church and her church family. She will be missed and remembered with love.
Maurine was survived by her daughter, Margaret (Darrell) Burnam of Sturgis, KY; granddaughter, Ann (Jeremy) Bryant of Zionsville, IN; grandson, Bill (Angela) Burnam of North Lauderdale, FL; great granddaughter, Mackenzie Bryant of Zionsville, IN and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Hughes and 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
Services are scheduled for 11 AM Saturday at Central Baptist Church in Marion, KY with interment in Mapleview Cemtery. The family will receive visitors from 5-9 PM Friday at Gilbert Funeral Home in Marion, Kentucky and from 9 AM until service time Saturday at the church.
